Take a seat, thank a Rotarian

Have you ever walked along the waterfront at Melton Lake Park while exercising or enjoying a festival or regatta and wished you could sit down comfortably to watch the waterfowl or rowers on the lake?

Now you can, because four benches have been installed in the park.

The benches were paid for by the three Rotary clubs of Oak Ridge using a Rotary district grant and donations from the proceeds from this year’s Flatwater Music Festival and Flatwater Tales Storytelling Festival.

City of Oak Ridge workers get ready to pour concrete to install a bench donated by local Rotary Clubs.

The three Rotary Clubs are the Breakfast Rotary Club, Noon Rotary Club and Sunset Rotary Club.

As city workers poured concrete to install the first bench, a dozen Rotarians picked up trash and raked leaves to beautify the waterfront. The leaves were raked into piles that were sucked into a city truck. City workers then took the leaves to the Solway Community to be recycled into compost and mulch.

Two of the benches are placed on the peninsula and two are near the park’s playground so parents and grandparents can watch their children while sitting and viewing action on the lake.

Flatwater Tales chair, Emily Jernigan, pitches in to clean up the area around the newly installed benches.

Emily Jernigan, chair of the committees that organized the festivals, said, “The Rotary clubs are grateful to all the folks who sponsored or bought tickets and attended our festival fundraisers. Their generosity helped improve the quality of life in Oak Ridge.”
